The Joy Of Pop

Howard Stelzer As a fan of the original 1981 LP, it's awesome to hear these songs polished up and sounding great. Strangled vocal histronics, melodic bass, minimal/angular guitar and sparse production... it sounds very much of its time, but for me that's a big plus. Favorite track: Burn Me Out Again.

ncluding notes from Dirk Polak : (short preview from the innersleeve)

It’s the strength of pastiche that lays in the subtitle, THE JOY OF POP, of the 1981 Mick Ness record Leave me your ears on Torso, catalogue number 333, which is now upgraded to the main title of a shortened album on Out Of Print. An hommage in the first place to JOY Division and the POP Group, but also to contemporaries like The Cure, Gang of Four, A Certain Ratio and other influential bands at the beginning of the eighties. Mick pays tribute as a soloist. As an omnivorous music lover who appreciates Elvis and Schnittke as much as Bacharach, James Brown, P.I.L or Abba he went to a studio in Belgium and recorded twelve tracks‘in the spirit of’ his beloved, contemporary musical colleagues, with an original and unique attitude. Armoured with guitars, bass, saxophone, violin and toy instruments, he was accompanied by long-term friend Pieter Bannenberg, who would take care of all of the percussion. Engineer Ward Kuczynski and myself as a producer completed the foursome..." read more in the album sleeve.

about

...Out came ‘Leave me your ears’, autumn 1981, badly pressed and in an impossible jacket. It disappeared into obscurity after minimal sales and left a sour taste in the mouth of all involved.

Mick restricted himself to home recording, while I recruited Pieter to do some sessionwork for the first mini-album by Minimal Compact. Later
Mick became a rocksinger in Hungary’s Sexepil and member of the Mecano incarnation Erector Set, where he met and worked with Esther
again after many years. Pieter started NL Architects, a succesful international design office still operating these days.

33 Years since the first release, the album still sounds fresh and captured the era like no other.

The state of the original analogue mastertapes, dug out of his attic and delivered by former Torso chief Hansje Joustra, made it possible to digitalize the album, re-master it and cut it to
vinyl.

Re-ordering the eight strongest tracks brought us

'The Joy of Pop',

a small wonder to me personally; a great sign of the times in general.
Made fit for 10 inch here is the living proof of well crafted songs by a solemn soldier.

Included is a CD of this record, expanded with four bonus tracks that actually restores the original ‘Leave me your ears’ album.
